Behind The Hate-Murder On The Red Line

Brothers Clint Johnson, 29, and Martell Johnson, 21, and their uncle Maurice Evans, 23, all of the 2300 block of West Warren Boulevard, are charged with first-degree murder and were ordered held on $750,000 bail in the death of Daniel McKinzie, 43, of the 2100 block of South State Street who was electrocuted after the suspects allegedly pushed him onto the third rail along the CTA Red Line during a fight.

Cook County Assistant State's Atty. Susanne Groebner told Circuit Judge Israel Desierto that McKinzie and two companions were riding a Red Line train about 3:30 a.m. Sunday when Martell Johnson "picked a random passenger on the train approached him asking his gang affiliation and started fighting with him." The quarrel turned physical, and when the train stopped at the Roosevelt station, McKinzie and his friends exited and began to leave the station.

CTA security cameras captured the incident on video and shows the suspects, armed with belts chasing after McKinzie, pushing and kicking him to the ground while Mckenzie tried to pick up a trash can to shield himself from the beatdown. When Mckenzie started running he was pushed off the platform and onto the tracks, where he came into contact with the electrified third rail severely burning him and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he died Monday.

Each suspect later gave police videotaped statements admitting to chasing and fighting McKinzie, Groebner said. Clint Johnson has one felony conviction in 1999 for drug possession, Martell Johnson has a 2005 conviction for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and was sentenced to 30 months in prison for that. Maurice Evans has a 2004 conviction for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and was given probation.
