the Supreme Court's 5-4 overturning of the Washington D.C. handgun ban on thursday's ruling found for the first time that the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution establishes the right to own a handgun for personal self-defense—not merely as part of a state militia.

"Does this lead to everyone having a gun in our society?" Daley asked while speaking at a Navy Pier event. "If the Supreme Court think that's the answer, then they're greatly mistaken. Then why don't we do away with the court system and go back to the Old West, you have a gun and I have a gun, and we'll settle it in the streets if that's they're thinking."

Barack Obama told Hillary Rodham Clinton's top financial backers Thursday that he personally has donated $2,300 to her campaign and more significantly has asked his biggest donors to help pay off her more than $20 million debt.

Obama made the announcement at a meeting with Clinton donors who have been frustrated that the Democratic presidential nominee-in-waiting had not done more to help her pay the bills even as they are expected to help fund his campaign.

Three Clinton confidants -- Cheryl Mills, Minyon Moore and Robert Barnett -- are in talks with Obama's campaign to work out details of her future involvement, including travel, her role at the national convention and resolution of her more than $20 million debt. Part of their argument is that Clinton can spend more time helping Obama if she isn't raising money to pay her bills.

Clinton's debt includes $12 million of her own money. She has said she is not asking for help to pay back that portion.

Some Clinton supporters, including some of those at Thursday's fundraiser meeting, have been frustrated with Obama's efforts to help Clinton with her debt while they are raising even more money for him. In response, the Illinois senator has asked five of his top donors to coordinate an effort to do so.

Finance chair Penny Pritzker said Wednesday in an e-mail to Obama's national finance committee "Barack has asked each of us to collect five or six checks to help Senator Clinton repay the people who provided goods and services to her campaign he made this request in the spirit of party unity."

Clinton and Obama plan to appear together for the first time since the end of the primary on Friday in symbolic Unity, N.H. -- where each got 107 votes in the state's January primary. Clinton won New Hampshire in an upset that set the stage for their long campaign, and it is now a critical battleground for the general election.

GOOD MUSIC

Rolling Stone asked Barack Obama what's on his iPod. His personal playlist includes ...Jay-Z, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Yo-Yo Ma

"I have pretty eclectic tastes," the Democratic presidential contender said in an interview to be published in Friday's issue of Rolling Stone.

Asked what he thought of rap, Obama said hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and rappers Jay-Z and Ludacris were "great talents and great businessmen." Obama said "the genre has broken down barriers within the music world" though he's concerned about his daughters Malia, 9, and Sasha, 7. "I am troubled sometimes by the misogyny and materialism of a lot of rap lyrics it would be nice if I could have my daughters listen to their music without me worrying that they were getting bad images of themselves,"he said, "but I think the genius of the art form has shifted the culture and helped to desegregate music."

Will Smith said he'd be willing to sign on to an Obama biopic, according to mtv.com. Smith suggested his large ears would fit the character of the presidential hopeful.

After busting loose from Cook County Jail Debra Triplett the 48-year-old grandmother from Aurora blamed R Kelly for her five weeks trapped behind bars. In her first courtroom appearance since getting locked up, on Wednesday Triplett apologized and pleaded guilty to criminal contempt of court and was released after serving 34 days of what could have been a 6 month sentence. Triplett, a self described "big, big fan" of Sylvester, has several drug convictions and was at the courthouse on May 22 originally for a criminal proceeding for her son. when Triplett and her kids found out Kelly was on the fifth floor of the courthouse she wanted to show her support for Sylvester by shouting "Free R. Kelly!" admist the jury entering the courtroom Judge Gaughan ordered her immediately jailed.

While Triplett was on lockdown her husband had to find day care for their 18-month-old granddaughter along with $5,000 of her $50,000 bail. Charles Triplett said "R. Kelly could have helped her out, he has the money." Triplett agreed that Sylvester should have done more for her "He should have let me know he cared," Triplett said. "Send me a message, a thank-you, a goodbye."

Sam Adam Jr. said,"Sylvester felt bad for her, he wanted to help her, but I advised him not to." Adam said he's sure Kelly would like to acknowledge her loyalty. "If she gives me her address, I'll make sure she gets a copy of his new CD when it comes out later this summer."

The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the woman Wednesday morning as Jeniel Morgan, 42, of the 1100 block of 161st Place in South Holland. The man was identified as Michael Rodgers, 34, of the 100 block of Lester Road in Park Forest.
He was shot at 1031 E. Sibley Boulevard and taken to St. James Hospital and Health Centers in Olympia Fields, where he was pronounced dead at 5:05 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

Police responded to a holdup alarm about 2:20 p.m. at Illinois Vehicle Insurance, 1031 E. Sibley Blvd., and were told that a man was holding a hostage inside, Assistant Chief Bolden Jones said at a news conference at the scene. A regional SWAT team was called in, and officers began negotiating with a man inside. He left the building about 4 p.m., Jones said. The medical examiner's office said Morgan was found shot to death in the office, and Rodgers was pronounced dead of multiple gunshot wounds shortly after arriving at the hospital. Autopsies were scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Jones would not confirm whether officers shot Rodgers or whether he had a weapon, but numerous witnesses said he was holding a gun and failed to respond to police commands to drop it.Jones would not say whether there was a relationship between Rodgers and Morgan. He said multiple agencies were investigating.

after being shot in gang gunfire Monday,8-year-old Josue Torres Jr.had a gut-wrenching plea for Stroger Hospital surgeon Dr. John Houston. "He said, 'I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I'm going to miss my family if I die'," Josue's mother, Jessica Perez, recounted Tuesday from her child's bedside. "The doctor told him, 'You're not going to die. Everything is going to be all right. We're going to take care of you'

Witnesses on Tuesday said Josue was sitting in the back of his parents' van with four siblings -- his 30-year-old mother in the front -- when the 10 p.m. shooting occurred, near Humboldt Park.

Josue's father was standing outside the van talking to another man when a black car with tinted windows drove by. Shots were fired -- striking only Josue Jr. -- then the car fled, police said.

"We need to get these guns off the street," she said. "Innocent bystanders are getting shot over garbage going on in the streets, and these kids want to live."
But at the same time the family was expressing anger and grief over gunshots aimed toward a van full of children -- and gratitude for the outcome -- Chicago Police in no uncertain terms Tuesday were pointing the blame at his parents.

Police described as gang-related the shooting at 1150 N. Spaulding Ave., and said they were investigating whether the boy's father was the intended target.

"I hate to say it, but the parents are to blame for that 8-year-old being shot. They choose to engage in this activity. Now we have an innocent 8-year-old who is shot," Police Supt. Jody Weis said Tuesday at an unrelated news conference, in some of his harshest words yet about the wave of child shootings.

bear jordan was reading the paper and came across this article about Shepell Terell getting shot by the CPD. And the first thing that came to mind was Bernie Mac as a black hating cop in Dont Be A Menace and Martin Luther the King's Poor People's Campaign in Memphis where garbage men were on strike.

Chicago Police Officer John Henry said Terrell confronted police with a gun. Police then shot Terrell, authorities said. Two guns were later found at the scene, said Mark Payne, a spokesman for the Independent Police Review Authority. Family members said it isn't possible that Terrell could have had a gun in each hand and opened fire with children around. They said police told them they were responding to a report of shots fired in the neighborhood, but all they heard were fireworks.

Nina Eskridge, 20, said her father worked hard at a sanitation job to help support his seven children, of which she is the oldest. "He worked as a garbage man to take care of his kids," "He was a gentle giant. He fell, and they kept shooting," Terrell's family placed his uniform for his job at Diamond Waste & Recycling Corp.
Greenlaw said he cleaned up the last of the blood that he said officials missed in their own cleanup. Despite saying he could handle the work, Greenlaw's eyes were coated with tears as he recounted the morning's task. "Don't ever do it," he said.

Obama Watch-Ralph Nader Reloaded

He’s back and he says he’s going to be on the Illinois ballot.

Ralph Nader’s independent presidential campaign says it will file more than 50,000 candidacy petition signatures with the state Board of Elections on Monday—double what’s required to appear on the November ballot.

The longtime consumer activist said on "Meet the Press" that Washington has become "corporate occupied territory" and that none of the current presidential candidates are sufficiently addressing corporate crime, labor rights or Pentagon waste.

"In that context, I have decided to run for president."
Nader quote from Meet the Press via Politico

Sen. Barack Obama called him "heroic" but suggested that he's a bit self-centered.

"He seems to have a pretty high opinion of his own work," Obama said. "I have to say that, historically, he is a singular figure in American politics and has done as much as just about anybody on behalf of consumers. So in many ways he is a heroic figure, and I don't mean to diminish him."

Obama, who won his first race, for Illinois state Senate in 1996, by challenging his rival's ballot petitions, also hinted that Nader won't get a free pass on the technical requirements this year.

"I think anybody has the right to run for president if they file sufficient papers," Obama said.
